Once the pink frills and princess themes are outgrown, how can you make a teen girl’s birthday special? Much of her enjoyment comes as she plans her party herself, down to the littlest details, so ask your daughter how she wants to celebrate and get her involved. My oldest daughter loves planning her birthdays. She even likes to bake and decorate her own cake with gobs of colors, swirls and sprinkles.

  1. Great post, Leah. Being a winter birthday myself, I would have loved to have had a half birthday party in the summer growing up – love the idea!

Thanks, Hank. My birthday’s around Halloween and I think because of all the dress-up and Halloween-themed parties growing up, it’s now one of my least favorite holidays! Fun to shake things up a little! Happy Half Birthday!

Leah, I loved this article and the great ideas. What a sweet tradition you have of telling your child’s birth story on their birthdays!
I’m with you about sleepovers. For some reason my daughter and her friends think birthday party MEANS sleepover. One of my sisters came up with a fabulous idea that I’ve adopted. We offer our daughters a choice between the party/sleepover or going on a birthday shopping spree with the money it would have cost to throw the party. Turns out the girls would rather go shopping. Not only do we forego the noise, mess, and sleeplessness, but we also get one-on-one quality time together! And manicures!

That’s a terrific tradition and choice! I love one-on-one days with my kids and it’s so important. Thanks for sharing your ideas here. I’d pick shopping spree, too, though as I’m older now, a good sleepover with friends is the best (though at our age, we really do get some sleep!) 🙂
